Sustainable Cooling

Service Overview
Supporting countries in developing policies, roadmaps, and projects towards sustainable cooling and access to cooling projects:

Cooling is an integral aspect of today’s life with a multitude of applications, ranging from preserving agricultural produce, ensuring thermal comfort for people, and extending the shelf life of vaccines. With rising temperatures and more frequent heatwaves, access to cooling is also becoming increasingly important. Approximately 1 billion people (15% of the global population) are at high risk due to a lack of access to cooling.

However, the widespread use of high Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants like hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and energy-related emissions from the operation of cooling equipment make it a significant emission-intensive sector. Currently, the refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) sector contributes to nearly 7% of global GHG emissions. This share is expected to double by 2050. To address this challenge and align countries with their respective climate targets, it is imperative to transition towards sustainable cooling by developing policies and roadmaps that promote the use of low GWP refrigerants and energy-efficient cooling appliances.

At Perspectives, we support clients at different levels targeting the transition towards sustainable cooling: at the national level, we assist countries in developing their national cooling action plans, establishing Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for RAC equipment, and integrating the cooling sector into their NDCs. At the project level, we focus on conceptualising innovative approaches related to access to cooling and sustainable cooling solutions. We also specialise in developing projects under Article 6, encompassing the development of financial models and comprehensive monitoring frameworks.
