Axel Michaelowa at the Petersberg Dialogue 2025

  • 25/03/2025 - 26/03/2025

Our senior founding partner, Axel Michaelowa, has representing the Research and Independent NGO constituency (RINGOs) at the 16th Petersberg Climate Dialogue in Berlin, which take place in March 25-26, 2025.

This high-level forum, hosted by the German government, gathers ministers and representatives from over 4 countries to shape the agenda for COP30 in Belém, Brazil, this November. Amid global geopolitical tensions, such discussions are vital for advancing climate action.

This year’s dialogue focuses on climate finance, ambitious NDCs, the Global Stocktake, adaptation strategies, and governance. Co-hosted by Germany and Azerbaijan (COP29 host), it aims to strengthen collaboration ahead of COP30. Belém, located in the Amazon, faces significant socio-economic and infrastructure challenges, making its selection as COP30’s host city both symbolic and logistically demanding.

Axel commented on the forthcoming COP30 presidency:

“The Petersberg Dialogue showed that the Brazilian COP30 presidency wants to host a ‘sober’ COP, showing the realities of a poor city facing a global climate tipping point. If Brazil is serious about this approach, it could end the trend of ‘World Expo’ COPs and mark a more manageable approach to COPs.”
