Germany’s Article 6 push could be a real game-changer, Sergi Cuadrat tells Carbon Pulse

  • 24/04/2025

In a recent interview with Carbon Pulse, Perspectives’ Senior Consultant, Sergi Cuadrat, discusses the significant implications of Germany’s new coalition agreement, which opens the door for the country to use international carbon credits (ITMOs) to meet its climate targets.

Sergi highlights this move as a potential turning point for international climate cooperation, with the ability to unlock new sources of climate finance and foster deeper collaboration with countries across the Global South. By allowing for a limited use of ITMOs — equivalent to 3% of its emissions reduction targets — Germany’s approach offers a credible solution for reducing emissions in hard-to-abate sectors without undermining the EU’s overarching climate ambition.

While the approach introduces some challenges, particularly regarding alignment with EU policies, Sergi believes it could serve as a model for other nations, potentially inspiring further adoption of Article 6 mechanisms. Germany’s strategy also aligns with broader EU efforts to integrate high-quality carbon removal technologies, such as Direct Air Capture and Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage, into climate policy.

Despite potential pushback from environmental groups, Sergi emphasizes that, if managed effectively, ITMOs could complement existing emissions reduction efforts and strengthen the EU’s long-term climate goals.
