Reduction of food losses of stored potatoes through improved storage facilities

Publication Overview

Publication Date: 10-2022

The Methodology ABM-NM001 is the first methodology approved by the Adaptation Benefit Mechanism Executive Committee. It is designed to assess the contribution of improved storage facilities to climate change adaptation. This methodology enables to quantify the reduction of food losses of stored potatoes through the implementation of solar photovoltaic-powered cooling systems that prevent the tubers from rotting due to increased ambient temperatures and extreme weather conditions. The technology targets smallholder farmers and cooperatives that usually store their crops in simple, non-refrigerated facilities. The methodology outlines criteria for project applicability, baseline scenario definition, quantification of adaptation benefits, and monitoring guidelines, ensuring alignment with the Paris Agreement and contributing to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
