Overview

The Hydrogen for Net-Zero Initiative (H2NZ) uses carbon markets to accelerate investment in renewable hydrogen and PtX projects and to get them built. It is developing a set of dedicated carbon methodologies under Gold Standard, Verra and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Renewable PtX projects sit at the edge of economic feasibility; the credits generated under these methodologies can close that gap and carry a project to a final investment decision (FID).

H2NZ also brings together technology innovators, investors, project developers and policymakers to work through how PtX and carbon markets are developing and how they interact.

Developing high-quality methodologies

Our international team of methodology experts is developing a set of conservative carbon methodologies for key PtX project types. These methodologies cover GHG emissions and reductions along the whole PtX value chain, and seek maximum standardisation between the different standards: Gold Standard, Verra's VCS and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Work on the first methodology started in Q3 2023, with more expected to follow.

Typical PtX project types include "green" ammonia production to replace "grey" ammonia, "green" fertiliser use, "green" steel production, industrial heat (using renewable PtX to replace fossil fuels), heavy-duty transport, international maritime transport, and international aviation / sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).

Market orientation & stakeholder engagement

Members of H2NZ take part in the initiative's information and communication platform. The platform works through the current questions in PtX project implementation and market growth, such as the interaction of carbon markets with evolving national regulation (the EU's CBAM and RED, the US' IRA and the Australian H2PCP), the move from voluntary carbon markets to Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, double-counting questions (how to make the right claim), and best practice on integrating H2 into net-zero implementation plans. The initiative also runs workshops on request covering GHG accounting, carbon crediting, standards and labels, and connects members for project matchmaking and joint implementation.
