Indonesia’s next chapter: Governance, leadership and reform

- 15/09/2025
On September 15 Axel Michaelowa, senior founding partner at Perspectives Climate Research, joined leading experts to explore Indonesia’s next chapter in governance, leadership, and reform.
Amid political change and ambitious climate and industrial goals, Indonesia faces a critical question: how can governance reforms unlock sustainable development, resilient democracy, and credible climate leadership? At the panel hosted by the Lowy Institute in Sydney, Axel provided insights on how Indonesia could benefit from participating in international carbon markets, highlighting opportunities to drive transparency, strengthen inter-agency coordination, and unlock private-sector capital.
“Indonesia has a long history in carbon markets and now has the chance to turn that into major opportunities under the Paris Agreement.” Axel stated. “Like India, the country could mobilise its private sector to embrace carbon markets, unlocking investment and export revenues.”
The discussion also addressed OECD and CPTPP membership, balancing climate commitments with industrial growth, and lessons from other countries’ carbon market experiences. The panel featured Professor Shiro Armstrong, Dr Ida Aju Pradnja Resosudarmo, and Dr Liam Gammon, with moderation by Dr Hilman Palaon.
