About Perspectives

Shaping effective climate policy, since 2003.

Since 2003, we have worked on climate policy, carbon-market mechanisms and UNFCCC processes, combining research and advisory work across public and private mandates.

Who we are

In 2003, Perspectives was founded by climate-policy experts from the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWA), just as the first theoretical concepts of carbon markets and emissions trading were being put into practice.

Today, Perspectives works across many fields of international climate policy, with more than two decades of experience and 260+ publications.

Headquartered in Freiburg, Germany, our experts operate from Austria, Finland, Germany, India, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the Seychelles.

Why work with us

Four reasons clients come back.

Regulatory leadership

Our experts lead and take part in international task forces and working groups, helping you understand today’s climate-policy landscape and the carbon markets of the future.

Scientific grounding

We are more than advisors: we help shape the field. With more than 260+ publications to date, we continually add to the understanding of climate-policy instruments, keeping you ahead of the curve.

Environmental integrity

Climate leaders must not cut corners. With us, you learn to tell sustainable activities from questionable ones, establishing your organisation as a leader and avoiding reputational damage.

New concepts, tested carefully

We work on emerging questions across mitigation, adaptation, finance and sustainable development, and test whether they have a sound basis for implementation.

Our story

Twenty years in the room.

From the first carbon credit to the Paris rulebook: a short history of Perspectives.

2003.
01 · The founding

Founded in Freiburg, before carbon had a market.

Climate-policy experts from the Hamburg Institute of International Economics set up Perspectives just as the Kyoto mechanisms were taking shape. The bet: rigorous research would be the scarcest commodity in climate policy.

02 · First of its kind

The UNFCCC approves our first CDM methodology.

AM0021, on N₂O abatement, becomes one of the earliest approved Clean Development Mechanism methodologies. Perspectives is in the engine room of the first global carbon market.

03 · Paris

Article 6 is born. So is our next mandate.

The Paris Agreement replaces top-down targets with nationally determined contributions, and its Article 6 opens a new era of cooperative approaches. We help write the rules we would later help implement.

04 · Glasgow rulebook

From negotiation to implementation.

COP26 finalises the Article 6 rulebook. Demand explodes for exactly what we do: turning treaty text into national frameworks, registries and bankable cooperative approaches.

05 · Two entities, one mission

Research that informs. Advisory that delivers.

Perspectives Climate Research gGmbH and Perspectives Climate Group GmbH formalise the separation that keeps our evidence independent, with a team of 50+ experts spanning 15+ nationalities.

06 · Today

COP31 is ahead. We are already in the room.

650+ assignments, 260+ publications, 40+ countries. The decisive decade is half over; the work is accelerating.

AI transparency

How we use AI

We use AI tools selectively to support tasks such as drafting, translation, and the production of this website. Every analytical conclusion, recommendation, and published figure is reviewed and approved by our experts. AI assists our work; it does not replace the professional judgement and accountability our clients rely on.
