Across the Voluntary Carbon Market, Article 6 and compliance schemes, environmental integrity is the non-negotiable, and we never invest in or trade credits ourselves.

Which countries are already running Article 6 pilot projects?
Article 6 pilots are furthest along in East and West Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and Latin America: Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Ghana, Nepal, India, Indonesia, Thailand and Peru all host activities or readiness programmes we have worked on, with Sweden and Switzerland among the most active buyer governments. Most activities are still pilots rather than scaled cooperation.
The Landscape of Article 6 Implementation (2023), the fourth edition of our annual review, assessed the preparedness of 51 host countries and found that implementation “is progressing but has only been slowly moving beyond piloting” (Hoch, Waweru and Michaelowa, 2023). The unfinished rulebook and the slow start of the Article 6.4 mechanism were the main brakes; on the host side, the report notes that many developing countries had begun building national frameworks for Article 6 participation.
For the member countries of the West African Alliance on Carbon Markets and Climate Finance, our Blueprint for Article 6 Readiness (2022) sets out the four building blocks a country needs before its first transfer: NDC alignment, an Article 6 policy, an institutional framework, and reporting and tracking.
