Key UNFCCC Side Events

To meet the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement, the global community must accelerate the deployment of both nature-based and technical carbon removal solutions. These approaches are essential for achieving net-zero emissions, especially for sectors with residual emissions. Carbon markets – particularly under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and through voluntary schemes – can play a central role in scaling these solutions and mobilise private capital. However, questions around environmental integrity, robust methodologies, and equitable benefit-sharing must be addressed to ensure credibility and effectiveness.

This event aims to explore how carbon markets can support the development and implementation of high-integrity carbon removal projects. The session will bring together policy makers, practitioners, and institutional stakeholders to discuss:

  • The conditions and frameworks required for removals to be eligible and attractive in carbon markets
  • Incentive structures to make removal credits marketable at scale
  • Emerging best practices for ensuring environmental and social integrity
  • Opportunities for mobilization of finance through Article 6, including the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism (PACM), and voluntary carbon markets
  • Early lessons from (pilot) projects and regional initiatives

As Southeast Asia confronts the urgent challenge of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, enhancing the ambition and implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) is more critical than ever. This side event will bring together ASEAN Member States, including Timor-Leste, alongside non-state actors and experts to explore innovative strategies for scaling up mitigation efforts and aligning NDCs with the region’s climate goals.

The event will mark the official launch of the Climate Policy and Institutional Capacity Development Pillar under the ASEAN–UK Green Transition Fund (GTF), a flagship initiative of the UK Mission to ASEAN. It will spotlight ASEAN–UK collaboration on strengthening NDC planning, carbon market readiness, and institutional capacity, while promoting low-carbon technologies and cleaner mobility solutions.

Participants will also discuss the role of climate finance in supporting ASEAN’s just transition, informed by the ASEAN Climate Finance Access and Mobilisation Strategy. Through dialogue and knowledge-sharing, the event aims to foster partnerships and identify pathways to accelerate ASEAN’s collective climate ambition.

Pavilion Side Event

Rice cultivation holds major potential for GHG emission reductions but remains one of the most challenging activity types to measure, implement, and scale. This session brings together experts from policy, research, and practice to discuss opportunities and barriers for accelerating high-integrity mitigation outcomes from rice production for carbon markets.

Dive deep into the flagship initiative of the UK Mission to ASEAN. It will spotlight ASEAN–UK collaboration on strengthening NDC planning, carbon market readiness, and institutional capacity, while promoting low-carbon technologies and cleaner mobility solutions.

Perspectives' participation in other side events

Axel Michaelowa | Transitioning Towards Sustainable Society

November 13 | 14:00- 15:30 | Stuf United Pavilion, Green Zone

Axel Michaelowa |  3rd Leaders Dialogue Workshop: Beyond emissions: Measuring co-benefits of the International Climate Initiative (IKI)

November 14 | 10:00 – 11:30 | Unamaz Pavilion

Climate co-benefits are mitigation or adaptation benefits that arise from projects, schemes, or policies not primarily focused on climate impacts. The Government of India is actively engaged in identifying such climate co-benefits, particularly from interventions in areas like the circular economy and urban forestry, where climate change is not the main policy objective.

This session will highlight the climate co-benefit methodology developed to assess climate co-benefits within India’s circular economy and urban forestry policies.

The event will:

  • Introduce the GVCM initiative and its planned activities;

  • Foster dialogue on aligning voluntary carbon markets with the Paris Agreement;

  • Explore collaboration opportunities between Korea and partner countries to advance robust carbon market practices
