Greening Chinese export finance: opportunities and ways forward

China has a key opportunity to green its export finance and accelerate clean energy access in the Global South, while advancing its own policy priorities. While progress have been made by Chinese ECAs towards clean energy finance, recent co-financing trends with state-owned banks and MDBs point to untapped potential . Targeted measures such as innovative financial instruments, expanded fossil fuel restrictions beyond coal, and climate-focused collaboration through initiatives like the BRI and BRICS could help scale up clean energy finance and align China’s export finance with global climate goals.
