Quantifying the shift of public export finance from fossil fuels to renewable energy
Following a multi-year research collaboration between HEC Lausanne, ETH Zürich, HEC Paris, Perspectives researchers Igor Shishlov and Philipp Censkowsky published the first comprehensive assessment of ECA energy deals with almost global scope. This open-access study published in Nature Communications highlights growing renewable energy support, especially by European Export Credit Agencies, but raises concerns about remaining fossil fuel financing and current inequities for lower-income countries. The authors analysed almost 1,000 transactions between 2013 and 2023 that financed energy-related infrastructure and were supported by ECAs with loans or credit guarantees.
