Key UNFCCC Side Events

Solar radiation modification (SRM) is receiving increasing attention as a controversial idea for reducing climate risks. This side event will explore views on the potential of responsible research and assessment by addressing environmental and societal aspects, governance, uncertainty, transparency, global equity and inclusion.

Prof. Nana Ama Brown Klutse (Vice-Chair of IPCC WGI and Senior Lecturer, University of Ghana) will provide an accessible overview and introduction to the current understanding of SRM research and its broader discussion.

Her talk will be followed by a panel discussion on SRM research and its governance moderated by Matthias Honegger (Project Lead of Co-CREATE with Perspectives Climate Research). The panel will include five complementary perspectives on governance and research. The five panelists will share their main reflections in lightning talks to spark the discussion with attendees in the room who will be encouraged to share their perspectives about the risks of warming and climate intervention.

Panelists will include Hassaan Sipra (Director of Global Engagement, Alliance for Just Deliberation on Solar Geoengineering), Thelma Krug (former Vice Chair IPCC Sixth Assessment Cycle), Jason Jabbour, United Nations Environment Programme), and others to be confirmed.

Climate finance has reached record-high levels but is still falling short of needs. This side event brings together Nordic and international experts to discuss how innovative finance mechanisms can advance climate action globally. With a focus on strategies from the Nordic region—such as renewable energy promotion, the “polluter pays” principle, and blended finance models—the event will explore how these approaches can help bridge funding gaps for climate adaptation and mitigation in emerging markets.

Moderated by Jukka Ahonen, Head of Communications at the Nordic Investment Bank, the event will feature Anne Beathe Tvinnereim, Norway’s Minister of International Development and Nordic Cooperation; Mattias Frumerie, Sweden’s Climate Ambassador and Head of Delegation to UNFCCC; Sherri Ombuya, Climate Policy Researcher at Perspectives Climate Research; Satu Santala, Managing Director of the Nordic Development Fund; André Küüsvek, President of the Nordic Investment Bank; Ash Sharma, Vice President of Green Transition Special Funds at Nefco – the Nordic Green Bank; Valerie Hickey, Global Director for Environment at the World Bank; and Lise Coermann Nygaard, Denmark’s Youth Delegate to the UN on Climate & Environment.

The SBM has been moving ahead with the operationalisation of the PACM. While the mechanism’s regulatory framework is progressing rapidly, key stakeholders for implementing activities are hesitating to act. This event aims to bring together stakeholders to discuss Article 6.4 mechanism participation.
