New Publications Explore Biogenic Carbon Capture and Storage in the Nordic Region

- 10/03/2025
The Nordic region is emerging as a leader in biogenic carbon capture and storage (bio-CCS), a technology that removes carbon dioxide from biogenic sources and stores it permanently. Two newly released publications, a discussion paper and a policy brief, examine how carbon market cooperation under the Paris Agreement could accelerate the deployment of bio-CCS by unlocking funding opportunities while aligning with national and international climate goals.
According to the publications, scaling up both public and private finance is critical to meeting global net-zero targets with bio-CCS. Carbon market cooperation can play a key role in mobilising these investments, but the way removals are financed, used, and claimed will impact the environmental integrity and cost-effectiveness of climate mitigation efforts. The authors emphasise the need for clear quality control, tracking, accounting, and reporting arrangements to ensure effective participation in Paris-aligned carbon markets. They also highlight that EU engagement in carbon market cooperation would require updates to existing legislation.
The discussion paper was authored by experts from Perspectives Climate Research and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, including Hanna-Mari Ahonen, Matthias Honegger, Axel Michaelowa, Matthias Poralla, Ximena Samaniego Figueroa, Paulien Veen, Kaja Weldner, Malin Dufour, and Kenneth Möllersten.
