Portrait of Hanna-Mari Ahonen
Environmental and social integrity are at the heart of all my work, because they are crucial for the credibility, impact and value of climate action.

Hanna-Mari holds an M.Sc. in Environmental Economics and has been working on international climate policy and carbon markets since 2002. Hanna-Mari has extensive experience working on a variety of emission reduction initiatives and programmes around the world and an in-depth understanding of the international standards and procedures that govern them. She has managed carbon credit project portfolios and funds on behalf of Nordic governments and companies for compliance under the Kyoto Protocol and the EU Emissions Trading System. She has also examined the environmental and social impacts of renewable energy and climate programs and their gender implications. She has represented the EU, Finland, Sweden, and the business community at the United Nations climate negotiations as an expert on CDM, JI, Article 6, adaptation, and loss and damage.

Hanna-Mari has dedicated her career to fostering the environmental and social integrity of the carbon markets. She currently focuses on promoting good practices in voluntary carbon markets and carbon market cooperation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

Recently, Hanna-Mari managed the Nordic Dialogue on Voluntary Compensation, which brought Nordic stakeholders together to co-create a Nordic best practice approach to the voluntary use of carbon credits. She has contributed to numerous studies on good practices for voluntary and Article 6 carbon markets, including for the Finnish government, the Swedish Energy Agency, and the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation. She also participates in research on carbon removal solutions.

Carbon markets can be a powerful tool to support efforts towards and beyond net zero if – and only if – they are used robustly and responsibly. Let us show you how.
